If you’re a record collector in Dayton, chances are you’ve flipped through the stacks at Skeleton Dust Records in the Fire Blocks District a time or two. Once one of the only storefronts on the block, Skeleton Dust is leaving the Fire Blocks a much more vibrant place than when they opened in 2017. I had a chance to learn more about Skeleton Dust’s big move to the Huffman Historic District with owner Luke Tandy and Pink Moon Goods owner, Kathleen Tandy.
Why the Huffman Historic District?
The Huffman Neighborhood is a beautiful residential area featuring gorgeous historic homes with tons of character you can’t find just anywhere. As a part of Dayton’s Historic Inner East, in the past few years, Huffman has welcomed some small businesses that add to its charm and walkability. One anchor in the community is Pink Moon Goods, which just so happens to be owned by Kathleen Tandy, wife of Skeleton Dust owner Luke Tandy. Naturally, the new Skeleton Dust Records stands side-by-side with Pink Moon Goods.
“The completion of stabilizing that corner is important to the neighborhood and we feel really honored to be a part of the vitalization of this great little city,” explains Kathleen. “This space was an upgrade in size that will allow for some new things,” explains Luke. “Being in a burgeoning neighborhood with history and grassroots development feels very exciting. There is still a lot of potential in the Historic Inner East and we are stoked to be here to witness its growth.”
Both Kathleen and Luke are transplants to Dayton by way of California and Indiana, respectively. Together, they’ve watched Dayton grow over 15 years. “When we think of how much Dayton has grown since we both moved here over 15 years ago, it’s truly astonishing,” explains Kathleen. “There is really something so exciting and satisfying being a part of that growth.”
With Huffman being the latest up-and-coming neighborhood in Dayton, retailers are definitely seeing the potential of the entire Historic Inner East community. Its walkability, beautiful gardens and homes, and diverse, grassroots revitalizing efforts make Huffman the kind of place people love to explore.
A Brand New Space for Skeleton Dust
Skeleton Dust’s 3rd Street location had a decent footprint for a record shop, but this move to Huffman will offer the opportunity to expand their selection and even dedicate room for live entertainment and more.
“There is definitely more floor space,” explains Luke. “We look forward to offering some new items such as books and movies while expanding the offerings of equipment.” Most exciting will be the dedicated stage area with a DJ setup for in-store guest DJ appearances.
The new location is a historic building that’s being renovated and lovingly restored to its former charm. “It’s amazing to watch the space transform from the days of it being boarded up and filled with old equipment to being this beautiful space,” explains Luke.
The space will feature restored original hardwood floors, clean white walls with patches of exposed brick, and lots of natural light. Parking along Fifth Street and the surrounding streets is free and convenient.
When can we shop?
Currently, the plan is to open in September with the following timeline:
- Ongoing until September – Yard Sale at 133 E Third Street
- Monday, September 9 – Soft Opening
- Thursday, September 12 – Artist Reception
- Saturday, September 21 – Grand Opening Celebration
The future of Huffman and the Historic Inner East
With the addition of Skeleton Dust, soon visitors to the Historic Inner East community will be able to buy records, sustainable home goods, wine and sandwiches, craft beer, coffee and cat cuddles, and more all within about a mile radius.
“Huffman as a community has been very proactive in making this little neighborhood a really pleasant place and Luke and I are stoked to be a part of what they already have been doing to grow this area,” explains Kathleen. “We are thankful and appreciate the neighborhood’s support.”
Keep an eye on this fantastic corner of Dayton because big things are happening in Huffman.
“We are so fortunate to be in the positions we are to own and run these little businesses of ours,” explains Kathleen. “We know that we would not be able to do it without the continued support of our customers in Dayton and beyond.”
Luke adds, “It’s clear this city believes in us and finds value in our businesses. We could not be more grateful.”
Skeleton Dust Records’ new location in Huffman will be opening in September 2024 at 2101 E Fifth Street in Dayton, Ohio. Stay up-to-date by following them on Facebook and Instagram.
