I recently booked a stay at Hotel Versailles and it was better than my already very high expectations.

The Experience

Arriving at this gorgeous hotel after a long drive through the country feels like some sort of dream. The historic downtown area is quaint with a few shops to visit and a great courtyard across the street featuring life-sized statues. There’s even a train that goes by every so often, which is absolutely perfect and exactly the kind of charm I was expecting.

The lobby is beautiful and checking in is super easy. Just past the lobby is the bar area where they serve handcrafted cocktails by night and lattes by day. Keep walking and you’ll find Silas Creative Kitchen, their in-house farm-to-table restaurant. Beyond that is their event space, 1819 Room, which can accommodate up to 200 guests.

The Room

First of all, this is absolutely the cleanest hotel I’ve ever stayed in – even compared to other luxury hotels. I reserved the One Bedroom Suite, which is the largest room at Hotel Versailles. It features a separate living room and a king bed. When you walk in, you’re standing in the biggest walk-in closet with shelving and a convenient full-length mirror.

To the right is the bathroom complete with beautiful fixtures and finishes. All of the overhead lights were on dimmers, which was a really great touch.

The living room had plush green velvet furniture, a desk and chair, and a fully stocked minibar with tons of locally sourced snacks and drinks.

The bedroom was separated by a door that could close and had a very comfy king-sized bed. They also have all of the hotel information on a tablet, which I’ve never seen before but really came in handy for checking out the restaurant menu in advance.

The Bar & Restaurant

Silas Creative Kitchen offers locally sourced, farm-to-table fare in a beautiful space on the main level of the hotel. Their menu changes from time to time to take advantage of the best seasonal produce available. Making reservations is a great idea and super easy online. The staff treated us like we were regulars the entire time, which was so friendly and welcoming. And because we indicated in the reservation that it was a special occasion, everyone went out of their way to make the experience really special.

We ordered several things, which the kitchen was kind enough to slightly modify to be vegetarian and vegan-friendly. Everything was delicious and presented beautifully. I can’t wait to go back for another meal one day.

I had the Versailles Gimlet, which is made with Empress Gin. They gave me a little shot of lemon juice to activate the lovely fuchsia color. Also, the house red wine was a wonderful red blend.

Breakfast was buffet style and had tons of fruit and potatoes, which are two of my favorite foods so I was very happy. There’s no way this can be planned but the coffee was served at the exact perfect drinking temperature – I’ve had thousands of coffees and that was a first for me. Although, after a night at this very special place, anything seems possible.

The History

Hotel Versailles is actually the latest hotel to occupy this site dating all the way back to 1865. The big question is definitely why would anyone build such an upscale, boutique hotel in a small town quite a ways off the beaten track. It turns out there’s a much simpler answer than I thought: it’s owned by Midmark Corporation.

“Our world headquarters is located roughly one mile from the hotel,” explains Midmark’s Director of Hospitality, Jack Olshan. “We bring doctors, veterinarians, and dentists from all over to Versailles to see the showroom and manufacturing process. We want our guests to experience the best lodging and food during their visits, but there wasn’t an existing infrastructure to accommodate these guests. Now, it’s not only an experience for Midmark guests, but also the community as a whole.”

Because much of their clientele is from elsewhere in the country, Hotel Versailles makes sure they get to enjoy all that Ohio has to offer. “We are hyper locally sourced throughout the experience,” explains Olshan. “We give a non-local guest a sense of place so they know where they are. We think the intense focus on local businesses, artisans, and producers creates an experience like no other – not only luxurious but also comfortable.”

The whole stay was effortless and luxurious – exactly what a bespoke boutique hotel in the country should be. They’ve set the bar so incredibly high, and I can’t wait to return as soon as I can to enjoy this glamorous hotel again.
