When Megan Smith reached out to see if I wanted to submit a recipe for her amazing community cookbook, From Dayton, with Love, I immediately thought about my favorite snickerdoodle recipe and went to dig it out from my cookbook shelf.

I wrote out the recipe the way I make it now, making vegan substitutions. And because it’s about and for the community, I also wrote about my earliest memories making these with my parents in our first home in Dayton’s Riverdale neighborhood.

This snickerdoodle recipe is for the crispy kind of snickerdoodles. They are great on their own, but I love them with coffee. It’s great to make these and have them in a jar for people dropping in over the holidays (or in my case, football season).

And because Megan is also a fan of all things vintage, she asked for a scan of the cover of the amazing 1970s Cookie Book the original recipe came from. It’s definitely the cutest cookbook on my shelf. My mom purchased the Cookie Book at a Scholastic book fair at school when she was a little girl.

With so many amazing bakers in Dayton, I wasn’t sure if my little recipe would make the final cut, but I’m so glad it did. And Megan baked every one of the recipes in the book to photograph them all.

If you’d like a copy, you can order one here. If you’re local, keep an eye on Megan’s social to find out where copies of From Dayton, with Love are being sold this season. Here are a few shops that have it:

It makes a great gift for anyone who loves to bake special treats or anyone who loves the Dayton community. Plus, it’s a limited release.

And if you make my snickerdoodle recipe, let me know!

This isn’t the first time Megan Smith and I worked together on a food-related Dayton adventure. We were co-judges for the Great Dayton Cake Off 2025!
