Experience the Joui of Painting with Tasting in Color

I decided to give this unique painting class in Dayton a try and loved it! It’s the last Sunday every month at Joui Wine and the perfect way to spend a creative afternoon downtown.

The Experience

When we got to Joui, the easels were all set with our canvases and all the supplies we would need were on the table ready to go. We just had to order our drinks and get started.

Our instructor, artist Dalia Kamal, introduced us to some ideas of how to use paint and the different brushes and applicators to interpret the flavors in the wine into designs on the canvas. It was really interesting to use wine as the inspiration.

Throughout the session, Dalia helped us with any questions and also gave us ideas to use if we weren’t sure what to do next. It was a lot of fun seeing everyone’s work and hearing a little bit about their interpretation.

I did the wine flight, so the taste changed from one to the next, but even if you stick with one wine (or beer, cocktail, or mocktail), you can pick up different flavors in it and use those to help move the painting along.

In the end, we have beautiful, colorful art we made ourselves that we’re going to love looking at in our home.

The Wine

I tried the Sunday wine flight, which happened to be Branch & Bone – yes, they make wine! I was surprised, too! They make their wine in South Park, just like their beer.

They were pouring two of their wine offerings that day: White and Red. These are natural wines, which means they tend to have a funkier, unfiltered and rustic sort of vibe. I like them both and felt lucky the weekly flight happened to be local!

White is a Chenin Blanc/Sauvignon Blanc blend with notes of honeyed pear and quince.

Red is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot with jammy, cherry notes and tannins for balance.

You can try Branch & Bone’s wines anytime at their taproom where they also sell them by the bottle.

The Details

Tasting in Color classes are monthly on a Sunday afternoon and you can sign up here. The next sessions are August 30, September 27, October 25, and November 29 in 2026.

The cost is just for the class and materials, the drinks and any snacks you’d like are separate at Joui.

The wine flight is recommended just because it will give you different tastes to work with, but not required – not everyone likes to try wines they aren’t already familiar with. Most people in the class bought a few glasses of one wine but found different flavors to highlight in their painting.
