When I spot a sangria on any cocktail menu, I know exactly what I’m going to order. This delicious, refreshing wine punch comes in red, white, and rose, and features any number of variations otherwise. Mostly you’ll find sangrias in the US served chilled and made with wine, orange juice, and brandy steeped with fruit and spices.
My favorite sangria is red sangria, especially ones where the wine itself is still the main character. Here are some of the sangrias in Dayton I order again and again:
Old Scratch
My #1 with the bullet. Old Scratch’s red sangria is the perfect blend of red wine and high quality additions that make the whole cocktail one to remember.
El Meson
My second favorite red sangria comes from El Meson. This is one where the red wine is the star.
Jollity
This spice-forward version of red sangria is absolutely delicious – plus the cherry in each one is the perfect way to enjoy the last drop.
Sueño
Another spice-forward sangria, Sueño delivers a cocktail that balances out the spicy Mexican cuisine perfectly.
Tender Mercy
This softer, sweeter red sangria at Tender Mercy might be the most refreshing, sippable cocktail on the menu.
Salar
It’s seasonal, but Salar’s smoked sangria is the stuff winter dreams are made of. They smoke the glass at your table to give you that little extra ambiance.
Some pinpoint the origin of sangria around 200 BCE, but similar spiced wine concoctions existed even earlier. Romans likely brought it with them to Spain when they conquered them. Spanish people started growing grapes to make wine to trade with the Romans and it became a popular drink in Spain as well. Eventually, sangria made its way around the globe through the generations.
