Old Scratch Launches 4 New Wines

Old Scratch has always offered a small selection of wines at its four locations in the Dayton region, but now with the help of Revel Urban Winery, they’re offering four great wines you can only get at Old Scratch.

The Wines

There are four wines in this new line up:

Bold Red

What it’s like: Smooth with dark fruit flavors

Varietal: Barbera

They say: “On the palate this wine packs a punch but is light on its feet. Ripe plum and blackberry yield to sour cherry. Low tannins and high acid make it the ultimate sipper.”

I say: I tasted this wine and immediately thought about a wintery day and how amazing it’s going to be in colder weather. I love deep red wines and this one is really great.

Pairing Suggestion: This would hold up well against rich foods or something spicy like their Mr. Scratch pizza.

Pizza Red

What it’s like: Vibrant with cherry flavor

Varietal: Blend of Sangiovese (60%), Petite Sirah (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%)

They say: “This wine offers savory leather and oaky aromatics. Then it delivers punchy fruit, good acid, with just the right amount of structure, retaining a smooth finish.”

I say: I thought this red was fun and a little lighter and more savory than the Bold Red.

Pairing Suggestion: Just like the name implies, this wine goes great with pizza – especially the red based pizzas.

Patio Rosé

What it’s like: Crisp with watermelon flavor

Varietal: Blend of Syrah (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), and Pinot Gris (5%)

They say: “Fresh watermelon and raspberry notes and subtle minerality. The soft texture leads to a zesty finish.”

I say: I love a rosé like this one that has a slight effervescence – it’s so refreshing and I’ve been enjoying this one the best this summer.

Pairing Suggestion: This is a versatile wine that could work with anything and especially the vegan pizzas, Mediterranean salad, or roasted cauliflower.

Brite White

What it’s like: Citrusy with melon flavors

Varietal: Blend of Sauvignon Blanc (80%) and Pinot Gris (20%)

They say: “This wine blend brings bright citrus notes and crisp acidity while contributing hints of ripe melon and a round texture to the mid-palate.”

I say: This is a really fresh white wine that’s almost clear in the glass. It’s so light and crisp, I think a lot of people will love this one.

Pairing Suggestion: Pair this one with the white pies like the Shroom or any of the burrata additions.

The Background

Old Scratch really prides itself on keeping things simple, and they told me that was a big focus when putting together this wine launch. They wanted customers to be able to walk up and order confidently without having to know a lot about wine. Each of the wines is really approachable and sort of a “best of” version for each color.

Deciding to work with Revel Urban Winery was a natural fit. They are producing such great wine in Cincinnati, which keeps things local to Ohio. When the owners of Old Scratch and Revel started working together to create these wines, it was clear early on that they were on the same page.

So far customers have really enjoyed the new wine menu, with some even selling out (they’re restocked now!).

The Details

These new wines are here to stay. They’re a part of the core bar menu going forward.

Old Scratch also reworked the sizing and glassware. Sizes are now a Glass at 5 oz, a Big Glass at 8 oz, and Shareable at 500 mL (or almost 17 oz). The Shareable size is good for 2-3 people to split. The glasses are now stemless wine glasses, which will make several wine drinkers happy to know (previously they used different glasses that people weren’t fond of – sort of a soup-in-a-square-container situation).

They don’t offer wine flights for sale, but you could ask for a tiny sample of each before making your choice. Or if you want to compare the reds or something, asking for a sample or suggestion could help you decide.
